Success Story #1
- Shavonna and Deija
 |
Shavonna (age 9) and Deija (age 4) are two of
our bright lights at Helping Hands. Shavonna is one of most
recently “mentored” children at Casa de Paz Roeser.
She is now involved in new activities and frequenting the hairdresser. Her
smiles are radiant because of her new experiences. Deijah
is the daughter of one of our most current working mothers.
That means she is being provided and cared for by the means
of her family and is experiencing the pride and ownership
of self-sufficiency which is one of the goals we at Helping
Hands strive to achieve in the life of each of our children.
On behalf of Shavonna, Deijah, and all of our children, thank
you for all of your support of Helping Hands this year!!!

Joan has had a pretty good job for several years. For
many months last year however, she had been experiencing back problems.
One morning late last summer, Joan awoke and was unable to move, literally.
She couldn’t walk and couldn’t even get out of bed. Although
her employer “kept” her job for her, her salary ceased.
Even though she did collect some modest disability pay, it was very
difficult to make ends meet. She was unable to keep her apartment
(evicted) and she and her three children were forced (and fortunate)
to move into Vista Colina, a transitional shelter for homeless.
Following their maximum 90-day stay at Vista Colina,
Billie Paulson, the Director of VC called me and asked if we had a
vacant unit for Joan. As luck would have it, we did. Joan was being
released from a physical therapy unit and was now able to come home
to resume her therapy but she had very little money and needed someone’s
help. We answered the call.
I’m very pleased to report today that Joan
has recovered sufficiently to the point that she has returned to work.
Joan and her children are part of our family and are so grateful for
the rent and other support that we provide.
