Between 1993 and 2000, Helping Hands served as a conduit for contributed capital with 100% of all funds re-donated to agencies that provide services to the homeless and working poor in Maricopa County. Over the years Helping Hands has provided assistance to Andre House of Arizona, Community Housing Partnership, The New Day Center managed by United Methodist Outreach Ministries and St. Joseph the Worker. Helping Hands raised money through corporate and foundation giving, individual donors and special events. Beginning in 2000, the organization changed its’ mission to become a provider of permanent affordable housing. Initially, HHHS acquired the Crest Apartment now known as “Casa de Paz Sahuaro”. This all two-bedroom 40-unit community is located in Sunnyslope (north central Phoenix) and is 100% occupied with a waiting list. The “market rent” for a 2-bedroom unit in this area is +/- $600 per month, however through our “Family Rental Assistance Program” (rent subsidy), our residents pay on average $325 per month. In August of 2005, HHHS completed the acquisition of Casa de Paz Sunland, an 80-unit property for seniors and disabled. HUD came to HHHS in 2004 to inquire as to our interest in acquiring CdP Sunland, and although seniors are not our primary focus, we agreed to so as to spread our outreach to others within the community. CdP Sunland is located at 435 E. Sunland Avenue in south Phoenix. This is a HUD “project based” Section 8 property (federal rent subsidy) where the residents pay a nominal amount for rent each month. The organization will provide certain support services all designed more for seniors and disabled. Later in August 2005, the organization closed escrow on Casa de Paz Roeser, a 56 unit family oriented property located at 1718 E. Roeser Rd. in south Phoenix. This is also a HUD Section 8 community but comprised of very low-income families. HHHS is in the process of constructing a full Program Services office at this site, and our Programs Coordinator based at CdP Roeser is Ms. Rosalind Akins. Finally in September 2005, HHHS closed escrow on Casa de Paz Fillmore, a 32 unit family oriented property located at 3335 W. Fillmore Street. Again, this is a HUD Section 8 property comprised of very low-income families that need assistance with almost all of life’s daily issues. Similar to CdP Roeser, we are in the process of constructing our Program Services office and classroom/community center. |
